Former Bulgarian Socialist Party MP jailed for accepting a bribe when he was a prosecutor

Former Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Toma Tomov has been sentenced by Sofia City Court to six years in jail for accepting a $500 bribe several years ago when he was regional prosecutor in Oryahovo.

Tomov accepted the bribe to terminate an investigation, the court found on December 23 2011.

The court barred him from holding office as a judge, prosecutor or bailiff for eight years.

Tomov’s then-deputy, Dimitar Vikentiev, was jailed for six years and nine months for interfering with the testimony of a witness.

The former head of the investigation office in the north-western Bulgarian town, Tsetska Krivachkov, was jailed for four years and seven months.

The three were ordered to share the payment of 238 leva court costs.

Bulgarian National Television reported Tomov as saying that he was confident that his conviction would be overturned on appeal because of procedural flaws in the trial.

The trial has been a protracted one.

In 2007, Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev requested that Tomov’s immunity as an MP from prosecution be withdrawn. This did not happen and prosecutors had to await the end of Tomov’s term of office.
