Croatia Arrests Zadar Tycoon Over Graft Claims

A leading businessman and media owner in Zadar, Reno Sinovcic, was arrested on suspicion of corruption and abuse of office alongside several tax service employees.

Sinovcic, who is also president of local football club NK Zadar, was detained on Tuesday morning at his home in the town on Croatia’s Adriatic coast.
Six others were also arrested in the same operation, five of them employees of the local tax administration office.
Croatian media have speculated that they are accused of embezzling some 1.3 million euro.
Sinovcic’s lawyer Andrej Korljan said that details of the investigation were secret.
“I can only confirm the information that Reno Sinovcic is arrested. It is too early to say anything more, until we have the complete information,” said Korljan, adding that Sinovcic’s apartment was being searched.
Sinovcic is the one of the most powerful businessmen in Zadar region and an independent member of the city council.
He is also involved in the Croatian football association, HNS, acting as president of the association of football league clubs.
The tycoon started out in business in the early 1990s reselling fish, using the money to buy up local media.
He has close connections with the centre-right Croatian Democratic Union, HDZ, which has been in power in Zadar since Croatia’s independence in 1991.
Although he left the HDZ in 2012, he has maintained good relations with Zadar’s mayor Bozidar Kalmeta and the local HDZ branch.
Kalmeta did not want to comment on the arrest, saying he only knew what was in the media.
