Clashes erupted on Monday as thousands of opposition supporters protested outside the Albanian parliament in a bid to stop the ruling majority electing a new temporary general prosecutor. The protesters clashed with police, who used tear gas in a bid to subdue them. Some people were reported to have been injured. Inside the legislature, the parliamentary session turned violent as scuffles broke out between MPs. The session was interrupted for a while when security guards didn't allow former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who is now in opposition, to make a speech. The opposition parties believe that the ruling majority is violating the spirit of the constitution by electing a new temporary prosecutor at a time when the High Prosecutorial Council, the body that will elect the new General Prosecutor, has not yet been established.
