Stop Buk Bijela, save the Drina
Dear Endrich,
The iconic Drina river connects Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.
But a decades-old hydropower project – Buk Bijela – threatens this unique ecosystem. It’s one of 14 planned large dams on the upper Drina basin, with many more small hydropower projects.
Buk Bijela raises serious environmental, legal, and financial red flags. It threatens the endangered Danube salmon, a species unique to southeast Europe.
Despite legal violations, the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina is pushing forward with a flawed process – ignoring cumulative impacts and an unresolved constitutional court case. Chinese companies are poised to build the dam as soon as it’s approved.
We’re expecting a public consultation on the environmental impact assessment at the end of this year or the beginning of 2026 and we’ll need your help. Sign up here.
Water is life: It’s time to put nature first.
