Heatwave Causes Water Shortage in Tirana
Albania’s capital is experiencing a water supply crisis this summer, blamed by the authorities on illegal connections to the water distribution network and many consumers’ failure to pay their bills.

The local water supply company in Tirana issued a warning to its customers on Sunday to save water due to the hea wave that has caused increased consumption and difficulties in meeting demand.
Local media reported on several cases in which supply was cut to just a few hours per day in some neighbourhoods of the capital while people struggled to find alternative water sources.
“Due to the high temperatures, we urge all consumers to be prudent in water consumption,” the company said in a press release.
However, heat is not the only problem causing the shortage in the water supply. Albanians, since the fall of Communist regime more than two decades ago, have become accustomed to receiving a poor water supply for just few hours per day due to rampant theft or illegal connections.
The latest yearly report from the Water Regulatory Authority emphasised that about 67 per cent of the water supplied in the country goes unpaid.
“Unbilled water is high and the water companies didn’t make any improvements in the last few years,” the report says.
