The centre-right VMRO DPMNE party led by Hristijan Mickoski celebrated a landslide double victory in North Macedonia’s parliamentary and presidential elections on Wednesday, winning almost three times more votes than the main ruling Social Democrats, led by Dimitar Kovacevski.
Out of 85,71 per cent of counted votes so far, VMRO DPMNE has won more than 356 thousand votes or 42,88 per cent of all ballots.
“Our estimates are that we will have at least 55 legislators [in the 120-seat parliament] but some in our analytical centre believe we could reach even 60. Let’s wait and see,” the vice-president of VMRO DPMNE, Timco Mucunski, said, adding that their party will likely form the next government.
Achieving what may be their worst parliamentary election result ever, the Social Democrats, who have been in power for seven years, won only 123 thousand votes or 14,82 per cent. The party conceded its election defeat.
“Today’s result is disappointing. The Social Democrats have suffered a strong blow”, the head of the Social Democrat, Dimitar Kovacevski said in his address this evening, congratulating the victory to his opponents.
Third place went to the junior ruling ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration, DUI, led by Ali Ahmeti, with 119 thousand votes or 14,30 per cent.
The DUI’s rivals in the united Albanian opposition “Vlen” [It’s worth it] came fourth with 93 thousand votes or 11,21 per cent.
The anti-Western Left party won 57 thousand votes or 6,87 per cent while the ZNAM party of former Social Democrat, Maksim Dimitrievski won 43 thousand votes or 5,26 per cent. All the other political players have won less than 1 per cent.
For the purpose of the parliamentary elections, the country is divided into six electoral districts, each contributing 20 legislators in the 120-seats parliament. Thus, the distribution of votes throughout these districts will decide the exact number of seats won by each party. A preliminary projection by the State Electoral Commission shows that VMRO DPMNE would win 59 seats, the Social Democrats would win 18, DUI and its smaller partners would win 19, and “Vlen” would win 13. The Left would win six seats while ZNAM would win five.
In the parallel presidential race, VMRO DPMNE also had reason to celebrater. Their candidate, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova came first, repeating the result from the first round of the presidential race, winning double the number of votes of her rival, the incumbent President, Stevo Pendarovski, who was endorsed by the Social Democrats.
Out of 87,91 per cent of counted votes, Siljanovska-Davkova won more than 481 thousand votes or 64,91 per cent, while Pendarovski won 217 thousand or 29,26 per cent.
“I
think that with me, take my word for it, surrounded by women similar to
me, subversive, independent, strong, who know how to express an
attitude different from men’s, it will be a big step forward”,
Siljanovska-Davkova told media this evening.
Pendarovski also conceded his defeat. “The results are clear… I wish success to those who won the majority support today”, he said.
Traditionally in North Macedonia, where ethnic Albanians make up about a quarter of the population, the wining Albanian party is usually the kingmaker for the formation of the government.
But VMRO DPMNE has said it does not wand the DUI in its coalition, and has opted for the united Albanian opposition, which has not fully laid out its cards yet on whether it would accept or not.
During and after the voting, the State Electoral Commission, the Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor’s Office assessed that the country had a quiet and orderly voting process with only a few minor incidents and technical problems.
