FBI Urged to Oversee Macedonia ‘Terrorism’ Case
Macedonia’s main ethnic Albanian political party
urged the US Federal Bureau of Investigation to oversee a possible new
probe of the terrorism convictions of six Albanians which sparked ethnic
unrest.

The Democratic Union for Integration, DUI, the junior party in the
ruling coalition, said that the FBI’s involvement in a possible renewed
investigation would instill much-needed public trust in the
ethnically-charged case which sparked mass protests after the six
Albanians were jailed for life for the murder of five ethnic
Macedonians.
“We have raised this issue at the highest possible level, during the
visit to Macedonia in July by US Assistant Secretary of State for
European and Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland,” said Artan Grubi, the
chief of DUI head Ali Ahmeti’s office.
Grubi told BIRN that the party expected a positive response from the
US and said that “the FBI will not intrude on Macedonian sovereignty
because this office is involved in other cases in the Balkans as well”.
Grubi’s party demanded a “transparent retrial” immediately after the
convictions of the six Albanian Muslims for the 2012 killings that
raised ethnic tensions.
Alil Demiri, Afrim Ismailovic, Agim Ismailovic, Fejzi Aziri, Haki
Aziri and Sami Ljuta were found guilty of terrorism in connection with
the killings. Two of the men who were convicted, Demiri and Afrim
Ismailovic, are serving prison sentences in Kosovo for other offences
and were tried in absentia.
The verdicts provoked regular protests by Albanians in front of the
court who insisted the case was staged by the government led by Nikola
Gruevski and was unjustly portraying Albanians as radicals and
terrorists. Smaller protests were held in other Macedonian towns and in
neighbouring Kosovo and Albania.
One of the protests in Skopje ended in mass violence when several
thousand people charged the court and were later pushed back by
heavily-armed riot police.
“We are not insisting that the defendants are innocent. But the trial
left the impression in public that the case is resting on very shaky
evidence,” Grubi told BIRN.
“The public impression is that the defendants have been sentenced to
life in jail because they were Albanians who threatened the Macedonian
Christian majority in the country,” he said.
“If a renewed investigation and a retrial prove that they are guilty,
we will be the first to call for the highest sentence as no one can
justify the murder of young people,” he added.
The US embassy in Skopje said it has not received any formal request from the government.
“DUI members have talked to us about the possibility of the FBI
taking a supporting role in the investigation in the 'Monster' case [as
it is dubbed by the Macedonian authorities] but the embassy has not
received a formal request from the government for this kind of support,”
the US embassy told BIRN.
The corpses of Filip Slavkovski, Aleksandar Nakjevski, Cvetanco
Acevski and Kire Trickovski, all aged between 18 and 20, were discovered
on April 12, 2012. Their bodies had been lined up and appeared to have
been executed.............

General Dostum und General Fahim zu nennen sind. Die Drogen Produktion,
die Drogen Handelswege und die Verteilung über Tetova, Bujanovac, dem Prevesa Tal und dem Kosovo muss abgesichert werden.
