Priština: UNMIK has lost all sense

PRIŠTINA -- Kosovo's deputy PM has called on states who have not yet done so, to withdraw their contingents from the UNMIK mission as its existence “has lost all sense.“
Commenting on reports that the U.K. would be scaling down its contingent in EULEX, Hajredin Kuqi said that Kosovo did not defend itself via the size of the international contingent on its soil, but via the policies of the international community, stressing that London’s decision was no cause for concern.
Kosovo opposition MPs, however, believe otherwise.
Naim Maloku, deputy leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, said that the pull-out should take place only once it was deemed that it would increase the Kosovo institutions’ efficacy, which, he said, was not happening.
The government and opposition were united in their view, though, that it was time to draw a line under the UN mission.
Kuqi applauded the departure of the Russian UNMIK contingent, while Maloku said that UNMIK had been a successful mission that had passed its sell-by date.
Earlier, Kosovo's foreign policy chief Skender Hyseni warned that the UN risked compromising itself unless it terminated the UNMIK mission.
Hyseni told Kosovo TV that he hoped that in spite of the lack of a consensus on the issue within the UN, a strategy could be found for ending the mission's work so that it could ultimately be "declared successful."
Hyseni called for the mission's withdrawal at Monday's session of the UN Security Council.
