Prosecutors in the city of Vlora indicted on charges of abuse of power and falsification of official documents the mayor of Himara, Vasillaq Bollano, accused of issuing a series of illegal building permits along the Albania southern coast.
Four other local officials were infected together with the mayor, all accused of issuing illegal building permits in the town of Himara and the village of Jale.
“From the investigation it has emerged that all the defendants have acted illegally in the process of evaluating and issuing a series of building permits,” said in a statement the office of the General Prosecutor Ina Rama.
According to the statement the probe was launched after a group of local residents complained that the mayor and its aides were issuing building permits on their property to other people.
Thursday’s charges were not the first against the mayor, who belongs to Albania’s ethnic Greek minority.
A court in Vlora sentenced him in late April to a six-month prison term and a 500,000 Lek (€3,800) fine, after being indicted for ordering the dismantlement of road signs because they were not bilingual, causing damage to public property. The verdict is currently undergoing appeal in the local appellate court.
Mayor Bollano of the town of Himara on Albania’s coast, ordered the removal of road signs in December 2007, arguing that the signs should also have been written in Greek, as he considers the area a Greek-minority zone.
Prosecutors filed charges against Bollano for abuse of power, arguing that his actions were against the law and that the removed signs cost Albanian taxpayers roughly €170,000.
During the final hearing of the case, Bollano’s lawyer tried to paint his client’s indictment as politically motivated and xenophobic because Bollano is also the head of an ethnic Greek minority organisation ‘Omonia’. However, prosecutors rebuffed those statements by arguing that this was not possible as the mayor himself had declared his nationality as Albanian during questioning.
According to the ruling, the mayor will also be barred for three years from holding public office.
