Februar sprach, auf dem die Staats- und Regierungschefs über den Krieg in der Ukraine, die Wirtschaft und die Migration diskutieren werden.
Bulgaria President Resists Sanctions on Russian Fuel, Aid to Ukraine
President Rumen Radev on Thursday said that “Bulgaria will veto possible European sanctions on using Russian nuclear fuel”, speaking ahead of a Brussels summit on February 9-10 where leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine, the economy and migration.
The President said he was concerned that two reactors in the country’s Kozloduy Power Plant, built in 1974, work under a Soviet model and so a change in the fuel transfer could be problematic. Radev also said it was “high time” for leaders to discuss how to stop the war in Ukraine instead of prolonging it.
“It’s rare to hear voices demanding peace, we hear cries for victory without anyone defining what victory is,” added Radev who said that the interim government had obeyed parliament’s wishes. In November last year it voted to send weapons to Ukraine but Radev said he hoped that “the interim government, in good conscience, won’t allow this to happen again”.
“One year after the beginning of the
war between Russia and Ukraine, the focus should be on how it can be
suspended and on efforts to come out with a peaceful solution,“ tweeted Radev later the same day. His statement on Twitter was followed by negative reactions to his alleged pro-Kremlin leanings.
Since the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Radev has strengthened his pro-Kremlin rhetoric, turning against pro-EU former PM Kiril Petkov and warning that any distancing from Russia will cause economic and energy disturbance. He has vehemently opposed Bulgaria donating weapons to Ukraine.
Since the ousting of ex-PM Petkov’s reformist coalition last June, Bulgaria has been led by an interim cabinet selected by Radev, with his social policy advisor Galab Donev serving as caretaker Prime Minister. The cabinet became locked in controversy on its first day of governance in August over plans to reinstate deals with Russia’s Gazprom.
Radev is also skeptical of North Macedonia’s EU accession, with his cabinet recently taking part in crossfires between the two countries.
