Tensions rising: Turks breach border, Greeks fire shots
The incident occurred last night, according to sources at the Greek Coast Guard headquarters, Katimerini reported.
Three
Coast Guard vessels immediately set out to the scene to warn the
Turkish fishing boats with repeated visual and audio signals to leave
Greek territorial waters, but the boats ignored them.
One
of the Turkish vessels performed a dangerous maneuver, risking a
collision with one of the Greek patrol boats. The patrol crew then fired
warning shots in accordance with regulations, after which the Turkish
boats withdrew.
However,
according to Katimerini, Turkish media reported a different version of
events, stating that the fishing boat had departed from the port of
Didim in the Aydın region toward the Aegean Sea, and was then fired upon
by the Greek Coast Guard.
Turkish
media reported that the vessel was damaged in the incident, and the
fishermen notified the Turkish Coast Guard, which confirmed damage to
the boat.
The
A Haber website reported that, according to the captain of the Turkish
boat, the incident occurred in Turkish territorial waters, and that the
Greek side fired six shots at the vessel, damaging the radar section.
