NATO chief: Balkans “top priority”

ATHENS -- NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that his task is to get all of the Balkan countries into the Euro-Atlantic structure in the coming years.




He met in Athens with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and Foreign Affairs Minister Dora Bakoyannis to discuss new NATO strategies, according to Greek news agency ANA.

Rasmussen said that he hopes that Greece will continue to actively participate in the activities of the Alliance in the Balkans, which has yet to be “completely stabilized,” adding that Athens will take a leading role within the European Union and NATO in order for all the countries of the region to enter these Euro-Atlantic institutions.

Rasmussen also met with Greek Defense Minister Evangelos Meimarakis to discuss NATO and its future.

Some of the topics of discussion were included the future of the new strategic doctrine for NATO and the relations between the Alliance and the EU, as well as security issues throughout Greece’s region.

Italian Army Brigadier General Sabato Errico is the first non-American to command the NATO forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). On 15th January, he took his assignment as the commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo (NHQSa) and senior military representative. In an exclusive interview with SETimes correspondent Antonio Prlenda, Errico spoke about the current defence reform in BiH and the multinational Combined Endeavour 2009 (CE09) communications exercise, which will be held at Banja Luka from September 4th-17th.

MADRID: Die Nachricht war am 19. März 2009 ein Paukenschlag. Ohne Absprache mit den anderen Ministern hatte die spanische Verteidigungsministerin bekannt gegeben, dass Spanien seine Truppen aus dem Kosovo abziehen wird. Diese Nachricht führte auch zu Verstimmungen im Spanisch-Amerikanischen Verhältnis und in der NATO. Doch die Ministerin setzte sich durch.

Zurzeit befinden sich nur noch 250 spanische Soldaten in der ehemaligen Krisenregion und kümmern sich um den Rücktransport des letzten Materials. Weit über 50 Prozent des Materials wurde schon zurück nach Spanien verlegt. Die operativen Tätigkeiten der spanischen Soldaten sind am 31. Juli dieses Jahres beendet worden. Wie der Generalsstabchef Jose Julio Rodriguez jetzt gegenüber der Presse bekanntgab, werden bis Ende September alle spanischen Soldaten das Land verlassen haben.

Neben den militärischen Aufgaben hat die spanische Armee auch Humanitäre Hilfe geleistet. Sie bauten Schulen, Straßen und Krankenhäuser. Die spanischen Truppen begannen ihre Mission am 22. Juni 1999. In den zehn Jahren der Kosovomission kamen neun spanische Soldaten ums Leben. Das letzte Todesopfer beklagten die Spanier im Oktober 2007. Hier kam ein Soldat bei einem Verkehrsunfall ums Leben.
